Sirjan Rug (Kilims) typically have both bold types and colors. Designs are often geometric, and sometimes feature flower (rose) motif. Various colors, such as blue, black, ivory and others, are often used against a red background.
It is 100% wool and hand made. Sirjan city produces antique Handmade Carpet (kilims) with traditional designs. Weavers are mostly women. Women start this profession from early age and continue till the end of their lives. Additionally, the designs are mostly based on the features of the surrounding nature. For example, trees, animals, such as goat, birds, and camels, are included in the designs too.
What is a Persian Kilim?
Handmade Carpet of Sirjan Rug are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands to produce a flat surface with no pile. The Kilim is mainly woven by nomads, and is extremely versatile and with geometric patterns and bright colors.
In order to globally register rug of Sirjan, the UNESCO international handicrafts assessors and supervisors traveled to the city in Kerman province, to visit Kilim Rugs Museum and Kilim weaving workshops in the rural areas of Sirjan, including the village of Darestan known as the world’s Kilim village.
So, In 2017, the Iranian city of Sirjan in the region of Kerman was successful in obtaining the designation World Craft City for Kilim weaving.
